Latin is alive and well. Beginning in Rome around 600 BC Latin became the language of the civilized world and remained so for over two millennia. French, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian are among its progeny and it still provides the international vocabulary of law and life science. No known language, including English - itself enriched by Latin words and phrases - has achieved such success and longevity. Tore Janson tells its history from origins to the present. Brilliantly conceived and written with the same light touch as Speak, his bestselling history of languages, A Natural History of Latin is a masterpiece of adroit synthesis. The author charts the expansion in the classical world, its renewed importance in the Middle Ages, and its survival into modern times.

This is a short, lively, and accessible introduction to the sounds of modern English. Its emphasis on variation, with examples from British, American, New Zealand, and Singaporean English, make it suitable for both native and non-native speakers. McMahon focuses on the vowels and consonants, but also discusses syllables, stress, and the phonology of words and phrases. She introduces new tools and terminology gradually, and discusses the motivation for key concepts.

What exactly are words? Are they the things that get listed in dictionaries, or are they the basic units of sentence structure? Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy explores the implications of these different approaches to words in English. He explains the various ways in which words are related to one another, and shows how the history of the English language has affected word structure. Topics include: words, sentences and dictionaries; a word and its parts (roots and affixes); a word and its forms (inflection); a word and its relatives (derivation); compound words; word structure; productivity; and the historical sources of English word formation.

Better Reading French has been developed for English speakers who have a basic to intermediate knowledge of French and is designed to help them read French better and to encourage them to read more. To read better, we must read more. As an encouragement for beginning readers, I have organized this book according to eight areas of interest: love, writing, cuisine, music, museums and gardens, science and technology, and symbols of France and Europe. At least one of these areas should interest the reader immediately, and after that subject is explored, interest in another will follow. The selections include material that has appeared in magazines and books, as well as on the Internet. In addition to recipes, essays, poems, book excerpts, and songs, there are original articles appearing in print for the first time. Selections not otherwise credited were compiled, adapted, or created by the author. While each section’s material relates to a topic in French culture, the section as a whole is not intended to be an overview or summary of the topic. Instead, the selections have been chosen for their broad appeal, their variety, and their likelihood to inspire readers to explore new horizons and to feelconfident as they encounter the written word in French in its myriad forms. Each section begins with the selections that are easiest to read, although none of the material has been simplified. The selections become progressively more difficult within each section. Almost all reading selections are followed by one or more exercises designed to help readers develop skills in understanding what they are reading. The overall goal is to help readers develop reading strategies that will help them understand and benefit from future reading material. If we can read better, we will read more.

In this classic, the world's expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.

Strazny introduces this work by recounting the enormous growth and specialization of linguistic studies. The specialization, as in other fields of inquiry, has created a number of disconnected linguistic worlds. To bridge the communications gap among scholars and to help inform the general public, Strazny, who holds M.A. degrees in linguistics and philology, sets out to provide an accessible introduction and an up-to-date overview of the entire science of linguistics.
Ranging from 1000 to 3000 words, the 508 essays each provide a general introduction to a linguistic topic (including fields of study and issues within them), a language (150 are covered), a crucial phenomenon that linguistic theory must explain, a person important to the field, or a linguistic region. The signed entries are all jargon-free, assuming no knowledge of the subject, and end with a brief bibliography. Strazny was ably assisted by a board of advisers predominately from U.S. universities but also from Europe and Australia. Bottom Line Comprehensive in scope but relatively short, this work invites comparison with the four-volume second edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, edited by William J. Frawley.
That outstanding reference work nearly doubles Strazny's coverage with about 1000 well-chosen, well-organized, undergraduate-friendly entries, making it perhaps the better choice for academic libraries only able to afford one. Strazny's is recommended for larger public libraries and exhaustive collections.-Paul D'Alessandro, Portland P.L., ME Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Professor Hudson presents a new theory of how we learn and use language, the New Word Grammar. This theory uses elementary principles of cognitive psychology to explain the structures and processes of language, and is put to work in a series of extended explorations of morphology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics. Every step of the argument and exposition is illustrated with examples ranging from the simple to the most challenging.
The author argues that language is a network of concepts which in turn is part of the general cognitive network of the mind. He challenges the widely-held view that language is an innate mental module with its own special internal organization. He shows that language has the same internal organization as other areas of knowledge such as social relations and action schemes, and reveals the rich links between linguistic elements and contextual categories. Language Networks will interest all those concerned with the structure, acquisition, and everyday operations of language, in particular scholars and advanced students in linguistics, psychology, and cognitive behavioural science.
